What is School Of The Air (SOTA)?

The NSW Department of Education and Training has special arrangements to deliver its educational programs to students who are isolated i.e., students whose special circumstances prevent them attending regular schools. These arrangements operate where the teacher and the student are separated by distance and the transmission of communication is most frequently by means other than direct personal contact.

One of its major facilities for the education of isolated students is a School Of The Air, which uses a variety of communication techniques. These communication techniques include video conferencing, satellite lessons,  telephone, fax, email and written materials to deliver curriculum content to students.

Satellite Video Lessons
State of the art technology provide teachers and students with enhanced lessons.

Each centre has a designated drawing zone. The drawing zone has been designed to give students, parents and teachers maximum contact through home visits, mini schools and workshops.

Each centre functions in a way that best suits local conditions. Teaching is conducted through the leaflet teaching systems with communication established through radio, telephone, email and fax. These learning programs are supplemented by school visits, mini-schools, workshops, social and cultural functions as well as air lessons.
